Pharaohs
In Ancient Egypt the leader and ruler of all the land was called a pharaoh. The word pharaoh means "great house". They would call their leader "pharaoh" because they believed that it would be disrespectful to call him by his own name. The pharaoh had a great deal of power in Ancient Egypt. People believed he was a god. They said he was descended from Re and was inhabited by Horus. Because of this he had the power to make all the laws, and was the ultimate owner of all the land. If anybody owned land it was only because the pharaoh allowed it in return for taxes.
The pharaoh also had some responsibilities though. It was his job to protect Egypt by leading the army, and to worship the gods to make sure that the nile flooded and that there was enough food for the people of Egypt.

Task 1:
As a class we are going to create some Inquiry Questions about Pharaohs. You will need to create 3 of your own inquiry questions.
Task 2:
Answer 5 inquiry questions. Some of them must be your own, others can be from the whiteboard (class activity).
Use your textbook and research to help you answer them. Remember to give enough detail in your answer.

Task 3:
Create a "Pharaoh Profile" in a new google.doc . Your profile needs to state all the interesting information about your pharaoh, e.g.
Name: (A lot of pharaohs had two names! One when they were given at birth and one when they became pharaoh. Can you find both?)
Gender: Male/Female?
Born: (What year was he/she born? Where was he/she born?)
Age: (How long did he/she live?)
Rule: (When did he/she become pharaoh and how long did he/she rule?)
Achievements:
Family:
Mummification and burial:
Interesting Facts:
and any other categories you think are important. (Is there a picture of your pharaoh you could include?)
Use the internet and/or your textbook to help you. A few starting points might be:
Check a list of names to choose a pharaoh:
Kids World list of a few pharaohs
List of pharaohs
Another list of pharaohs
Two names of each Pharaoh and name meanings
Check some other sites for even more detail:
Heaps more detail here (scroll down to the name of your pharaoh)
Use the Ancient History Encyclopaedia and search for the name of your pharaoh. (A
reliable alternative to Wikipedia!!!)
If you choose Hatshepsut you will find information about her on page 36-37 of your textbook.
